Thread: Texas Wesleyan

    Question Texas Wesleyan

Beyond the fact that it's located in Fort Worth, anyone know anyone that has had personal experience there at that school? Did they enjoy their time there? Were they undergrads or grad students? Was it ultimately worth their time?

It's a highly regarded school, but not in the best part of town.

    Nope... doing very well indeed!!

And this is not to count my chickens before they hatch, but this would be a continuation of my education - law school. Without uprooting the family and engaging in a whole new life elsewhere (mortgage, etc.) Wesleyan's law school and SMU's Dedman School of Law are my nearest alternatives. Neither is affordable, but I've got some remedies for that... and the wife is supportive of the idea.

Ultimately, it fulfills the goals of my youth, plus it allows me to, if needed, be able to work for myself by hanging a shingle out do contract work. Television is automating quickly, we're gonna be sold in this quarter, and I'm getting tired of this gig... so I'm looking a year or two ahead to graduation and life after it.

Plus, with my age and experience, and if I can keep my grades up, I'll be in a good position to get in to either. My school advisor (a practicing lawyer) was telling me about some of my options... and also mentioned that he thought I would do well.

I went to SMU for my MS in geophysics. I used Atlantic Richfield's dime. If you could intern with a local firm, maybe they would help with expenses. You have a good plan, and good luck.

Yup... I'm gonna stay in the television/entertainment industry since that's what I know and can take advantage of... but I figure it's my turn on the side that makes money. I just want to be able to make sure that we'll have a stable retirement... and not worry whether the corporate gods are gonna screw with our fate.

I work in the main campus of Wesleyan... If you need/want some more info/contacts, let me know. The school is mostly known for its law program (and also nursing/anesthesia). The law school is in a better location than the main campus...

In terms of how the legal market perceives Wesleyan vs. SMU there is no contest: a degree from SMU will open lots of doors if you keep your grades up. Wesleyan will open not so many doors. For the same money, you should absolutely choose SMU. It's a better law school. By a lot.

US News rakings aren't perfect, but they're not wholly inaccurate. They put SMU at #43 nationwide and Wesleyan way down in Tier Four.

    Good luck with everything, Beano.

Not really... I was going to pursue being a Canon lawyer. Actually, I wanted to be (don't laugh because it's an actual title in the Catholic church) a Devil's Advocate. Basically the fella that argues against the church for the church... I know, strange.

    Thankfully I'm not Catholic anymore...

My daughter is in her last semester of TWU Law School. She has had no trouble lining up job offers. I am sure SMU is held in high esteem within the law community and a degree from there would be a door opener. Fort Worth's lawyers are really standing up for the TWU program. From the lawyers I know they say it is a program really on the way up. I know it is not cheap. The Law profession (maybe more then others) seems to be HIGHLY political so if you get that degree and pass the bar, who you know still carries the most weight.

I am not sure if the TW law school is accredited. If it is, it is only in the last year or so. Check it out. If you want to practice law in Dallas, Texas, then you should go to SMU. There is a very strong local "system".

On a side note Texas Wesleyan gave me a scholarship when I was a senior in High School, so they can't be all bad. I didn't attend, I went to UTA.

I'm pretty sure that we are ... I had a professor that graduated from the law school here and is a full-time practicing lawyer (in Dallas) and teaches night classes part-time.
