A buddy of mine got nailed on his way back from las Cruses NM. He was pulling a trailer loaded with his Jeep. The trooper followed him for about 10 minutes before pullinghim over. Nailed him for Over registered weight on the truck, over registered weight on the trailer, in adequite towing preperations (only one chain and not crossed under trailer toung.) and acouple of other things. Apparently that was the third tow rig he had stopped that day. My buddy figured he was running the registration on the truck and trailer to see if it was worth pulling him over or not.

I don't care what most inforcement's say, there is a lot of profiling going on out there. I got stopped on the way to TMS in Denton sportin' numbers and slicks, and the reason he pulled me was because of no front plate. Not that he didn't have a reason, but I was in the middle of pack w/ cars in front and behind and some yahoo just passes going atleast 15 or so over, and who gets the questioning. Yep, it was his reason to start the whole process of interogation. I drove away with a warning. But still frustating in that it was one of the only times I'd been pulled over after making a concerted effort not to speed because I knew I was marked.

The real reason he pulled me over? My mom's neighborhood had an armed robbery, and my car was registered at her address. The cop tried giving me shit over having a different address for insurance and registration (wrote a check to the dealership and they did all the paperwork w/ the address on my check). The entire time he was near my car, he had his flashlight out and was trying to look in the backseat and trunk. I almost offered to open the car up and let him look at how empty it was.

He also asked me if I had my contacts on after seeing the corrective lenses part on my license. I offered to show him, and moved them around in my eyes before he even answered. Yes, both eyes, he saw me do the right one and asked about the left When I first did my right eye, it was "too fast" for him, and he wanted to see it again. So I leaned out the window as far as I could, and showed him, this time slowly so he could process it

To be fair, at this point I turned into smart ass mode. He had a lot more pointless questions he asked and I felt that what he was doing was plain harassing. I bet he was pissed that he couldn't find anything to give me a ticket for.

He didn't even ticket me for the registration either (it was only a week or so out). It was a waste of 10 minutes for both of us, even more so for him, as he could have been doing something a lot more worthwhile.
I had one of my friends that was studying to be an attorney once told me that if you get pulled over the police can only detain you for a certain amount of time, somewhere between 10-15 minutes. If they don't write you a ticket within that time they have to let you go. Otherwise you could file harrasment charges against him/her.
    Blah blah blah!

Yep, 10-15 is plenty of time to discern for probable cause. If nothing becomes apparent it is just harassment.

    Keepin' the streets safe... right.

What irks me, is that I'm 100x more nervous when theres a friggin cop anywhere around me than some drunkard swerving across the road 50ft away.
I know I'll get screwed over if I get close to the drunkard.
But the cop could screw me over for no reason at all in the blue.
Aren't you supposed to feel safer around them?

Well, be careful, I hear that many police now have SCMODS, so they can learn everything about you.

But as with anything, if you don't have anything to hide what are you worried about. Unless breaking the law, nothing usually comes of it, just waisted time. Sometimes I feel good about it afterwards knowing they really just wanted to see the car.

Harpole in Northlake wrote me for crossing a double line, then proceeded to do the same with me behind him. :BS:

Sherriff U-turned in front of me with no lights at night, I stopped 2 feet from his door.

Nearly put in the guard rail by a Game Warden 4x4, because he wanted to make one more car before the merge and was on his cell.

Put in the ditch by Justin PD, passing up hill in my lane way out in Ponder.

Why are cops not held to a higher standard.

+1 on that. I see cops breaking laws I'd get tickets for every day. Speed limits, turn signals, tailgating, etc. Many seem to have the attitude that because they enforce the laws, the laws don't apply to them.

To top it off, the couple of times in my life I have actually needed their assistance, they were indifferent or downright uncooperative. I guess there's more revenue to be made in writing tickets than in finding the guy who broke into your apartment and stole your TV.

I'm sure there are cops who are really out there to protect and serve. Unfortunately I seem to meet the ones whose badge reads "To Tax and Harrass".

Iain, I wasn't implying that all cops are bad.
I have friends that are cops and I was in law enforcement myself.
But why are they not held to a higher standard, you will never see a cop write a cop. the code!

Sure not all are bad. Its just the bad examples that leaves bad taste in our mouths. The off duty cops are the worst drivers, especially the ones smoking in their uniform.

I wasn't suggesting that they're all bad. I know there are good cops out there. I know that many of them put their life on the line every time they put on a uniform.

I try to give individual police officers that I meet the same benefit of the doubt that I would give anyone else. Unfortunately, most of the ones I've interacted with so far in my life have not earned my respect.

Ever wondered how many accidents are actually caused by speed traps and other minor traffic infractions? Especially with the new law that requires you to slow down 20mph below the posted speed limit or get out of that lane whenever a cop has someone pulled over. I see people slamming on the brakes, swerving out of their lane without checking to see who's next to them, or else just slow down to try and see what's going on.

In any given group, be it politicians, police officers, religion, lawyers, prisoners, MME posters, or your coworkers, there will always be a percentage that are good and bad. I find that people are just either good or bad -- it does matter what their label is.

    Ding! Ding! Ding!
    We have a winner!
When we have cars broken into at work, the Dallas PD won't even come out to investigate. We even had one of our employees punch the crook in the face thru the open window of there car as they sped off. He even got the licence plate number and the cops wouldn't come.

About a year and a half ago my Miata broke down in the worst possible spot.
I pulled over on the shoulder of I35E headed north at the Webs Chapel Exchange. Right at the end of the shoulder where it starts to tapper off.
I watched as two different Dallas PD cars drove right past me. Luckily a passer-by stopped and we tossed a tow strap over my roll-bar and he pulled me down onto Herry Hinds. He told me he had to stop and help because his best friend had been killed there a couple of years earlier.

I don't think it's entirely the officers, I think they are pressured by there administrators and the city and county governments to bring that money in. Even if that means neglecting there ability to serve and protect.

But hey, at least we have lower taxes!

My neighbor is a dallas cop. I asked him what typically keeps him busy and what types of tickets he generally writes the most of. His response was that he spends most of his time responding to domestic disputes and his most commonly written ticket that he prefers is inspection and registration. He said that he would rather someone only pay $10 for the court fee and get there car taken care of, plus you can't really fight an inspection or registration ticket so he doesn't have to deal with the court issues. His patrol area is a large block from within 635, the tollway and the edges of addison, richardson and farmers branch. (tons of apartments and condos)

I got pulled over a month ago in plano. The cop followed me for 5 miles before pulling me over in traffic. I signaled, went the speed limit (in and out of the multiple school zones) and did nothing questionable. He pulled me over for no front license. He said that he hadn't "seen" me in that area before, so he was just writing me a warning. I guess he keeps a close eye on miatas, but not law breakers!

    Yep Skirt, another prime example.

Barbara and I broke down in the 3500lb Thunderbird on Main St Justin.

We were pushing the car. The fat ass cop pulls up tells us to get it out of the road, but won't get out of the car to help.
He pulled into the boot store and chatted on the cell. :rolleye:
Barbara was not much help and I nearly got a hernia pushing.

Some of the cops that used to be in McKinney were the kids we all harassed in High School. I think they were taking their aggression out on society. Needless to say they aren't cops anymore. I see it all the time. Use to wonder why they took "to protect and serve" off the sides of their cars, now I know. Some are only interested in meeting quota mandated by the state for their precinct. But, they are still doing something I wouldn't want to do. I have to thank them for that.
