Thread: Do you have CHL and if so, what ya packin?

  1. #61

Default Given the current state of national politics...

Well, now that the "I want to take away all guns to make people safer" crowd owns everything in Washington, I'm starting to think I'd better grab a handgun while I still can. I have shot before, but I've never owned a handgun. I found this thread, and it has some great information in it, but the last post is about 18 months old and technology has progressed a little.

Any thoughts on what folks would buy now? I'd definitly want a reliable, compact, easy shooting gun. The Springfield XD9 sounds like a great choice, but I am partial to Glocks for their extreme reliability and light weight. Not really looking to carry, but would probably get the license anyway...

    Thoughts? Recommendations?

In the end, it boils down to what feels best for you. If reliability is the main reason you would want a Glock, you have a ton of other options out there... most guns from major manufacturers are extremely reliable now (especially if you use the right ammo).

There's many ranges around DFW that have rental guns so you can try before you buy. I highly recommend that you do...

Personally, the feel of the XD series far surpasses the Glocks, but again, personal preference. I'm currently carrying a Beretta 96D in the winter and a small Beretta 948 in the summer (or in light clothing). The 96 is a little heavy though... lots of metal, no plastic

Once you know what you want, hit up a gun show and buy it!

XD or Glock for reliability. According to the chronograph, the Glock feels better *to me*. Subjectively, I like the XD better, but I shoot better (and faster) with the Glock. It all depends on your hand shape, so shoot both. Buy the one you like. Bullet Trap in Plano has excellent rental firearms.

You are more than welcome to join me for a day at the outdoor range in Carrollton (I think I may have offered this before). I only have Glocks. Sigs are also fantastic firearms, but I have issues with the trigger, so even though I really want one, it's unlikely I'll buy one anytime soon.

I want a pistol and an AR, even more so now.

The brother's wife just got a Sig. But I'll probably take a hard look at Glocks, I haven't heard much negative about any of their pistols.

I"ve shot well over 3,000 rounds, with my Ruger SR-9, using various different types of ammo. I have yet to have a single round jam.

My favorite place to buy guns is Gunbroker.com, kind of like ebay. I will carry any caliber as long as it is .45 acp. I have grave reservations about the stopping power of the 9mm. I'm sure there are many valid arguments in favor of the 9mm but none of them has ever convinced me. I carry a full size Kimber in the car or winter jacket and a mini Glock (45) in summer.
I have a Dillon progressive press and literally load thousands of rounds at a time so ammo expense is not an issue. Much like driving it's all about practice and very little about the gun. I have had a .45 as my constant companion since 1977.

I just bought a Taurus 24/7 OSS in .40S&W last month at Academy. It's the extended slide version of their single/double action pistol and came with the match grade barrel.

It shoots VERY well and fits my hand perfect. Flip the safety up with your thumb to ready it for firing and if you flip it up further it decocks the pistol and puts it in double action firing mode.

If you ever have a dud round just pull the trigger again. The double action part will let it hit the round again with the firing pin to help you try and fire it again BEFORE you try to clear the round from the chamber.

Kestrel - everything posted above is valid info. But why are you buying the gun should be your first point for selecting the gun. If you are looking for home protection, shotguns are better - especially if you don't plan to practice a lot more often than you AX.

Nobody mentioned wheel guns. If you plan to leave this gun in a drawer until some fool kicks in your front door, a revolver is the way to go. Just point and pull the trigger is easier to do than having to flip a safety, point and pull the trigger.

The price of guns and ammo has gone up incredibly since last October. The first weekend of November (before the election) AR's, handguns and even ammo had almost doubled in price! Normally you see a couple of dealers selling AR's, at that gun show, 55 of the tables had new AR's!

    Two more things to consider:
Location - where do you want to store the gun?
Security - you have two small children and a wife. Do you want any of them to have unsupervived access to your gun

Let me know next time you go out. I've been thinking about getting licensed (although probably won't carry). If I do decide I will have a HK USP compact .40.

A nice biometric gun safe would be handy to have in the bedroom. Put your finger on it, it pops open, and you grab your weapon.

Keeps it nearby, easy to open, and it's out of reach of the kiddos.

I bought a Glock 19 over the XD due to how it felt in my hand. I have been very happy with it and plan to start shooting more when I have time.

We need an outing to Elm Fork.

It'd be funny to see all these Miatas drive up and unload a bunch of weapons to fire.

I have not bought one yet, but I intend to test it out at the Target Master in Garland at Jupiter North of Miller. They have one in their rental fleet for $20/hour plus ammo.

Had one since I was able to get one. I used to carry either a G17 or XD9. After a while I stopped carrying the XD cause I shot the G17 much better. I recently sold the XD to a member on this board and used the money to pick up a G26 that is now my primary carry gun.

Also got a old S&W Model 1917 (45acp wheel gun from WWI :) PT1911 and S&W Snub Nose .38spl but don't carry them all that often. The S&W is my motorcycle carry gun cause it fits in my inside chest pocket easily. I haven't tested the G26 in that pocket yet if it fits well I may sell that .38 for something else or more ammo lol.

Got a bunch of rifles also but unfortunately can't carry that around lol.

    ZOMBIE THREAD!!!

    Anyway

I'll be picking up a new Beretta PX4 from a friend soon, along with a Crossbreed Supertuck holster for it. The lighter weight of the PX4 coupled with the much better holster will be superior to the heavy 96D and hip holster I currently use, plus it will allow me to carry a full size pistol in the summer when I'm not wearing a coat. He's giving me a heck of a deal on it

I'm thinking I might pick up one of these for when I'm wearing a longer coat....
