Going to Kuwait for work

What would you say if your son, grandson (4 months old) and daughter in law wanted to move to Kuwait to work? She will be making 29k usd a YEAR! He wil make about 32K usd a year.

I vote no as well. In general, women are not treated well in the middle east. I've known people who have worked there and ladies have needed chaperones to go shopping, can't drive, etc. And just as a fact of life, Americans have a target on their backs in today's world. Kuwait may be more progressive, and US friendly, but that doesn't mean the general population feels the same way.

I am not in the education business (educators step in), but with a Master's in education, people do not get paid equally as well as one with an MBA. Is the amount of money tax free and is travel and rent paid? If so the money would be good. Just pray that they can assimilate and have no harrassment issues.

Is there is any sign on/end of contract bonuses, all housing/car expenses and travel back and forth to the States. If all these are paid for, it can easily double or more of the cash stated. Still, it is too little money for the risk. It is not fun to live in place that you don't even know a soul or anyone to bail you out when you are in trouble. It put a lot of stress on the marriage. Especially having a little kid in the mix.

I gotta tell ya, that's crap for wages.

I'm an RN & have many friends that have worked in the ME, they would not go back for the wages that are currently being offered.

If your kids can manage to save 100% of their income, and avoid paying US taxes, it may be worthwhile, but I'd take a pass...

That's kind of what I was thinking.

In Iraq, that little country right next door to Kuwait, they were offering bus drivers $140,000 a few years ago.

Back in 1998, I heard of jobs in Turkey paying aircraft mechanics with F-16 experience $150,000. The drawback was that you had to live on an airforce base in a tent and worry abou getting shot.

A guy I worked for turned down an electrician job at Halleburton in Iraq for $70,000. He did'nt ask about any of the per diam pay or benefits.

They should definitely turn it down. Thats not much pay for the Middle East. It's only Tax free if you spend over 11 months out of the US, if I remember correctly.

Kuwait is a hell hole as well. It's hotter than it is in Iraq, it was 130 on the flight line today.

If there's anywhere I'd consider just visiting or working very temporarily, it would be Dubai. I visited their amazing track while I was there too.

BTW The civilian equivalent for my job, helicopter mechanic, makes $185K-$215K a year tax free over here.

Well they have decided not to work in Kuwait. We have never heard the "real" reason but at least they are not going.

I wouldn't teach kindergarden or deliver mail in the DFW area for that kind of money. I think they made the right decision.
