sorry to hear that. That is why I try to avoid driving behind trucks.
Ever since I got my hood repainted I've been giving lots of leeway to the vehicle in front to avoid rock chips.
Driving to work last night I was behind a tractor trailer at about 60mph when all of a sudden a huge retread comes out from under him. With no escape route, I slowed as much as I could but it covered the entire lane and I hit it head on. It appeared to be folded over three times and looked to be at least 8 foot long.
Today the damage toll is front spoiler cracked, lots of paint damage on spoiler and bumper and a fog light is broken loose.
If I ran the NHTSA I would require all retreads to be serial numbered and traceable to the retread and the trucking companies. You lose a retread and you get fined. The amount of retread on these roads is ridiculous and a major safety hazard.![]()

That sucks, any pics of the carnage?

Hey... I ran over a hood the other day... Fortunately I was in the truck. And comically, it had safety clips at all 4 corners...

Make sure you don't go flying on a commercial jet liner. They all use retread s that have been retreaded several times.
Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

yea, too much crap laying on the road
I hit a snow shovel in my Z06 one day -- no way to avoid as it was spit out from under the Suburban in front of me
$600 and two weeks later I got hit by a shattering glass table top as it fell out of a pickup
haven't repainted the nose of the vette yet, waiting on the next thing
and, a few years ago, got a pickup truck bedliner thru the windshield of my Camaro at about 50mph
glad I was wearing glasses
was proud I didn't mess myself

I saw a lady on the news last night that took a rod of metal through her face and neck. She was alive and now is recovering.
Dude, that sucks!
I feel the same way you do about retreads, it's crazy that all we have to have is a code showing and not pass inspection but an 18 wheeler gets to drive across country dumping large pieces of rubber everywhere.
In my opinion, if you can't buy new tires the truck and trailer need to stay parked period.
It only costs other travelers in higher insurance payments and claims.

Barbara and I got a Landscape trailer ramp gate in the nose of the old BRG.
Eastbound On US80 near Terrell, It was flipping and I did the best to avoid it in the rain. I fully expected to be decapitated that afternoon.
If it had hit a inch higher we would have been, but it went under the car.
Blew a brand new RE-71 an bent theout of a hollow 7 spoke.
The lady behind us hit it too, and when I went to check on her she was in a cast and looked like she had already been in a wreck.
She had swerved to miss a dog the week before and flipped 4 times. (didn't swerve this time) :o
I changed her tire and then ours.
Went on to have a good hoiday in Jefferson.
Also saw a Mustang GT loose a front wheel on 35E in Farmers Branch.
Wheel slowly started to bounce until it went over the median and went thru the passenger windshield of a schoolbus. (luckily 06.30, no kids)
The 2 fellas took off running and left the GT in the freeway.
I figured it was stolen, knowing the neighborhood.
Anyway glad your alright William, could have been much worse.

Sorry to here that. that blows. actually when i was in school in the big truck class we were told that most of the tread seperations like that are from virgin tires and not the retreads.

A few years ago, I was on 635E near Jupiter Road. I was following a Caddy and next thing I know there is all this gravel flying out from underneath it, and it's taking a major nosedive. I quickly switch lanes just as a large concrete slab like object comes out from underneath the Caddy. Turns out it fell off the construction truck that was in front of the Caddy. It got wedged between the bumper and the ground until enough of it ground off to fit under the car.
I was driving from Ft. Hood to MA, and ran into my first experience with a retread. I was following pretty close to the semi in a white Hyundai Accent and the tire seperated. Part of the tread bounced up and left a huge skid mark accros my bumper and hood. I get to MA and my friends and family ask if i got run over.
I was driving from NJ to Dallas, because I was bringing the Integra down. I was in either Kentucky or Ohio (I don't remember) and it was pretty late at night on a dark road. At the last second I notice a tire tread laying in the road and try to swerve to miss it. I ran over it with my driver's front tire and didn't think much of it. The later the next day, I notice a vibration comming from said tire so take a peek only to find grease on the inside of the rim. The tread ripped up the CV boot and the grease got flung everywhere. In addition, a day's worth of dust and dirt sticking to it had thrown the tire out of balance enough to give it a few flat spots. By the time I made it to Dallas the tire was shot with a couple of the spots showing cords.

lugnutjon and I once had to avoid a sofa that had just fallen out of the back of a UHaul on I-20. The UHaul driver hit a bump, the rolling door rolled open, and out popped a full-size sleeper sofa, all in the blink of an eye.
Many years ago, I lost two tires and a front fascia on I-635 one afternoon when the '70s land barge in front of me lost its entire exhaust system as it went over a bump. I think Bean was driving it.![]()

I once had to avoid a dryer that floated up and out of a back end of a Jeep truck on I-10 through El Paso.![]()
Cruising along I-10 between Lake Charles and Orange at 2:30 in the morning, on my way back home from work, I heard a big bang in front of me. My car pool partner was a truck driver and told me to jerk over to the far right. No sooner than I did, there was a metal fender off of the 18 wheeler in front of me, along with an alligator.
On other time on my way into work, I was behind a Hot shot driver that had the rear window busted out from a 18 wheeler tire that went south on him. The guy barely missed getting slapped up side the head with that tread and just followed the trucker off the exit ramp.
On another night, while traveling by myself back to Orange on I-10, I was seeing a few of the mexican carivans when all of the sudden an orange uhaul tow bar was laying on the road in front of me. The car had come seperated from the bar and was in the median with a couple of the mexican carivans stopped to pick the vehicle up. I called it in to the Troopers. They were on it in no time flat.

I was in Houston in my old RX-7 and just changed lanes to get around a big rig. As I clear the back of the rig, I see a metal 55 gallon drum sitting in the middle of my lane! I yanked over hard and just missed it, but spun the car. I managed a semi-controlled fishtale across two lanes and into the grass. Didn't hit anyone else and no damage. Well, except that the girl I was on a first date with wouldn't ride back home in my car. Of course looking back, that happened a lot and there usually wasn't a near death driving experience involved. Huh....![]()
