Thread: WTB: Miata Hardtop Hoist

    Default WTB: Miata Hardtop Hoist

Anyone have a hardtop hoist they are looking to unload.

Also does anyone have anything bad to say about them, they seem to be a good way to lift the top off and store for short periods of time. Other than putting a safety tether on the eye that screws into the Ceiling joist they seem to work well.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I was going to get one, but then I realized I would need to pull the car up pretty far into the garage to clear the garage door, which means I would loose all the storage space having a short car gives you.

If you get one that has plastic clips, do not trust them. You should add metal clip rings as a back up. Trust me, I know

They are great until the HT falls on your car or on the floor or both.

Just in case I can't sell it I need to store it off the car.
The weather is too nice to have a hardtop on.

    Thanks Chris.

Well lots of things have happened lately. Bought a house and got married in the past couple of months.

The house is about a 1/2 mile north of 1171 off of Morris. It's nice to have a garage to work on the car finally.

And the backyard has a great view...

Do you recognize the metal sculpture that Wiley designed?

    Take care,

This has been working for me for seven years or so:

one 2x4 fastened to rafters using six long bolts (black arrows) and
two vinyl-coated hooks that hold the top by the F-bolt receivers

With enough wingspan and a strong lower back, it's possible to singlehandedly remove the top and hang it in under a minute.

Stumpy....that looks like a sanitary method of hanging it up on the wall.

I got a bike hoist at WalMart for a little under $20. Secured it across several rafters as shown above (to spread the load across the structure of the house). To get away from scratches and failing hooks, I just used some cloth strap and criss-cross wrapped it securely around the top, then attached that to the hoist. The whole thing was less than $25 and I can securely install or store the hardtop by myself.

At the very least, the hardtop hoists on the market are overpriced for what they are. You can figure out a better solution.
