Thread: Windows XP question...

    Default Windows XP question...

In Windows XP, under the Network Connections heading, there exists a connection for a Network Bridge... what is that for?

Network bridging in XP allows you to connect your XP machine with multiple network interfaces (ethernet, wireless, usb, etc) to each other without a router. What this does is allow for inexpensive connections of simple networks.

If this isn't clear here is a good explanation. Link

    Example:

    Computer1 ----- XP with two interfaces ----- Computer3
    |___________________| |_______________|

A Bridge will make those two connections one logical network looking like:

    Computer1 -----XP with two interfaces ----- Computer3
    |___________________|_______________|

    Thanks for the link...

    although this stinks:

    • You cannot create a bridge connection on a computer running Windows 2000 or earlier versions of Windows.
I was wondering if I could bridge my XP laptop with my 2000 workstation.

I believe that is only a disclaimer to not look for how to setup the bridge from a 2000 machine. The bridge is managed by the machine with 2 nics or interfaces, and it has to have XP. The others that are connected with their single NIC dont have to be XP.

I am really surprised that no one has told him to go by an Apple. Perhaps MS bashing has finally died down?

I'm frankly surprised that no one has sent him on a wild goose chase to screens that don't exist, just for sport.

Hey Bean... this is really dangerous. What you need to do is disable the Network Bridge cipher link. Start-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Configuration-> then set the cipher cache to 0k. That should take care of it for you!
