The energy is shifted from the rear (in a RWD car) through the drive line (assuming no slipping/properly working clutch, at this time clutch is fully engaged, and the sychros are just chillin') to drive the engine. If done properly and at a correct/safe RPM, this will overdrive the engine but will not result in dangerous over reving (sky high RPM level).

    Wheew... That's my

Well, my point is, if you don't heal-toe i.e. rev-match and just downshift. There is a good chance, at least if your driving competitively, that you'll brake the drive tires loose and weeeeeeeee, I mean Arrrrrrrrrrrr, bad things happen.

Okay, now I think I understand what you were trying to say. Since neither you nor Chad mentioned braking in your previous posts, I didn't address it in my responses. Chad's original scenario involved downshifting to 2nd (while looking for 4th) on the freeway (no braking was mentioned).

Robert, I agree with you on the point above - if you manage to botch a downshift in a car w/o ABS while you've got the driven wheels at or near their traction limit under braking then yeah, you might spin the tires instead of overrevving the engine. In that case, the tires would be the path of least resistance.

So the only lesson I needed was... No, the synchros won't stop it. If yours do, they might be worn.

I think I know how to stop the synchros...

No, actually I've been at work all day today. I've only had a few cigs. Haven't had a drop of anything. It's just that I've been watching those two go back and forth all day and I just couldn't take it any more.

I was joking about them ::BLee:: so I thought I'd have a little fun.

i can back up the tires locking up, but as you guessed the car wasnt going in a straight line. i was an MR2 Spyder taking a wide left hand turn at a fairly quick speed. i was in 5th, went to shift to 4th to pull through the corner. matched my revs and let the clutch out. SCREEEEEEEECH- car spun around twice. i had grabbed 2nd gear instead of 4th. didnt hit anything, but i still needed clean pants. LOL. the tranny in the MR2 has left a bad taste in my mouth since.

again- this wouldnt have happened if i had been going in a straight line, the RPM would have shot well over redline.

If even traveling in a straight line, you would have been pointing somewhere other than straight when all was said and done.
