    Thanks in advance!
    The 2 ways I know:

    1. un-hook the battery.
    2. Talk the kid at AutoZone into looking the other way while you fiddle with the code reader to find the 'CLEAR' button. They are not 'allowed' to clear any codes, but you can if you can get hold of the device.
FYI...un-hooking the battery will put 4 things in a 'Not Ready' state, and that alone will fail you at inspection. The car would have to be driven 40-50 miles to load the computer back up with data after a battery disco.

I think the guy at inspection told me 2 'Not Ready' codes is not a failure.

Find somebody with a fancy code-reader that can clear/erase codes. Should be no issues going that route.

    Samm,

I have a code reader that works on my palm pilot, I would be glad to clear your code. Just give me a headsup and we can meet somewhere and I will do my magik.....

Thanks Chris! I put in the new plugs and wires this morning, and reset the computer (disco the battery) at that time. I've put a little over 40 miles on the car since, and no check engine light so far.

I was told clearing the code, will basically clear the whole computer and it wouldn't pass inspection like that. (It would show a lot of 'Not Ready' conditions)

It takes about a day or so for the computer to run through all of the tests to make sure everything is working, but I think it does the same thing when you unplug the battery. Glad you are rolling code-free.

Well, I spoke too soon. On the way home tonight (around mile 90 since the disco) the CEL re-appeared.

Guess I'll go get it read at Autozone and call my friendly Mazda service dept. to check it out for me. Hopefully it's just the cat, which is still under warranty!

Just picked the car up from Hiley Arlington (thanks for the ride POS!) It now has a new (still under warranty) and no more CEL!

They wanted to do a throttle body cleaning for only $523. I told them I can do that myself (we have done several cars already). It needs brake pads front & rear (already bought them last week) and supposedly the slave cylinder is leaking. I can find no sign of that, but I told the service guy I can do that one too. Just give me the free stuff please! :P

Does your mother know you watch that? :)

We should make bets for the next CEL...j/k. Hopefully that's it.

    Yay for extended emissions warranties!

Hope that solves the problem, Sammm.

Wow... throttle body cleaning for $523? Did that include the intake manifold, or just the throttle body?

What's a can of throttle cleaner go for these days, anyway? :P

I think it included the intake as well. Hard to beat a $3 can of cleaner, some Q-tips and paper towels.

I think any vehicle made in 1996 (the start of OBD-II) and newer is 8 years/80K miles.

Yep, I'm pretty sure it's a federally mandated law. Sounds like your friend got screwed... not suprising , if you're talking about who I think you are.
