Thread: Remote Mounted Turbo?

  1. #1

    Default Remote Mounted Turbo?

I didn't know whether to start this thread in FI, Parts is Parts, or Bull...

However, I saw an ad for this today, and was wondering if there was any benefit in a turbo setup like this - STS Remote Mounted Turbo.

It looks silly... but then again I may just be stuck in the paradigm. Any thoughts?

Built-in intercooling. Intake piping provides ~50% intercooler efficiency. There is no need for the expense, pressure drop, and installation problems associated with a front mounted intercooler.

I wonder how good the throttle response is with 10' of exhaust piping between the head and the turbo, and another 10' of piping between the turbo and the intake manifold? Mmmm... nothing makes a turbo fun like a couple of seconds worth of lag!

Those setups have been very popular in the camaro/firebird crowd for a while now.....

I remember reading something about those 6 months ago. They claim they've sized the turbo specifically for this application (remote, I mean) and lag is not significant. Of course, seeing is believing.

lol, a friend showed me an article on a car site about this. don't remember the link but could google it....

Basically a turbo where the muffler should go....different and stupid IMHO.

I guess it makes since with the Camaro/Firebird cause like Merv said, they already have tq, and space under the hood is non-existant. Took me 8 hours to change the plugs the first time on my 96 Z28!
