I think it would also get old answering the same question over and over when you drive it.

Are you thinking about this to replace the Beemer or the Miata? To replace the Beemer, I think it's a no-brainer. As a replacement autocrosser/DD for the Miata, fuggedaboudit.

    • It's got over 60% of its weight over the front wheels
    • It's got a very high CG.
    • It's got 18"x7" wheels and very little clearance under the fender for bigger tires.
    • It's front wheel drive.
    • It's got MacStrut suspension, and little in the way of adjustability.

Add those all up, and you've got a nose-heavy, camber-limited, FWD porker that will eat performance tires like they're going out of style. Remember how Mini's are famous for cording R compounds in like 30 runs? This has all the drawbacks of a Cooper, plus more weight and more power on the same width tire.

Contrary to what Titus has said, I don't think anyone will seriously campaign the MS3 in D Stock. People have talked about it, but it has too many drawbacks and not enough advantages over the other cars in it's class. I think the Type R will continue to be the dominant Tour car, while the R32 and 2.5L WRX will be the go-to choice for Pros.

Now if you wanted to spend the same money at your local Mazda dealer, you could get a rwd car that seats four with better balance, better brakes, better power/weight ratio, better adjustability, and room for up to 285s () without even rolling the fenders. A car that you could slap a set of Azenis on (for about the same price as it would cost you to put tires on an MS3) and go win Tire class tomorrow with. A purpose built sports car that also happens to be practical to live with, instead of some tarted-up boy racer fwd economy car.

Saw it coming a mile away!

BTW, it's Bimmer, not Beemer. Beemers are motorcycles.

Yeah, may have been all talk... I know one of the places I saw mention of it was here. I saw some talk on it somewhere else too, but I don't recall where.

No brainer=good or bad? I'm confused! I'm still trying to convince the wife she really needs a Speed3! (not working yet BTW) She still loves her Bimmer.

    Good points Iain, thanks.

I think the MS3 would be a great replacement for the Bimmer. Comfortable, capable, lots of cargo room and fun to drive on the street. For the Miata? Not so much. It might make a better daily driver than the Miata, but I doubt it's nearly as fun to drive at the limit as a Miata or RX-8.
