It comes out pretty easily with the steering wheel out.

    Default Holy Crap!

Heck, I'm looking at a mesh grill and seeing no lower attach points. I'm not in your league yet, however, I'm a willing accomplice! (who likes beer) ....Dogg

yeah, no lower attach points on the mesh grilles... not a big issue as they fit & work just fine.

So with some help from BAM!, the AC unit was removed. Right now, I'm still working on tracking down all the air bag wiring... about halfway done. However, the spaghetti that is the wiring is something to behold when it comes unzip-tied.

    In all honesty?

Because I can. It's not meant as a smart arse answer either.

My Miata is my play toy and not even my second means of transport. I bought the car to have fun with... and after having seen several guys go light-weight with their Miatas... well, that bug bit me too. I initially wanted to go Spec with this car (and I may still - provided I keep the heater core & others) but having read and researched other Pointy Board Members and their ultra light-weight rides, I felt that this is what I wanted to do with my car. I'm not looking to fit into any specific SCCA class, or wanting to drift my car... I just have become obsessed with having a very, very light Miata.

I know it doesn't make sense to some Miata pilots and frankly, I don't give a rats ass if they get it or not. As much as I may complain or throw fits during this exercise, I, honestly, am rather enjoying the whole process. It has definetly given me an intimate knowledge of the interior of this vehicle. But I can tell you this... I love taking my car out and enjoying our back roads romps... and especially the feeling of being in a roadster that'll turn on a pin and is tossable in the corners. I know some folks will say that they do the same in their fully rigged MX-5's but I just know it's a different beast when it's ultra light (not that I'm there yet, but slowly achieving that goal).

We'll see how serious he is... if he does:

Removal of all air ducting, fan, and heater core...
Removal of the dash & instruments... replacing them with an aluminum panel & instruments
Replacement of that solid shifter knob with a hollow one or plastic one

To be legal you do need to keep your windshield wipers in place... well, as long as you have a windshield

I'm interested to see how light it does eventually get.

Don't forget the baby teeth - those are a couple of pounds too.

    Ahh... the $64K Question -

I didn't weigh the car before I began my shenanigans.

    I deserve a for that!

But I'm hoping that by using factory numbers I'll be able to ballpark the figure.

Isn't that GVWR? The POS sticker shows 2,700 lbs, but on scales she is a svelte 2,193 lbs.

Well, the airbag wiring is 95% removed. What a royal pain! However, I feel better having almost accomplished this task. I hope to have the radiator done, heater box replaced (yeah, I changed my mind again - I love the heater on these chilly late night runs of mine!) and re-wired again. I hope to great googly-moogly that I didn't miss anything or clip any wrong wires!

I don't expect a world of difference off the bat... but we'll see what the ol' butt dyno registers!
