    Default Are they competitive?

Hey track gurus, a question for y'all: How competitive have the following cars been in autox Stock classes? And if they haven't been competitive, any thoughts on why not? Thanks!

    1. Nissan 350Z

    2. Mazda RX-8

    3. Bonus question: any predictions on how the Solstice GXP or Sky Redline will do?

I don't know about the Z or the GM stuff, but I believe that the RX-8 has been very competitive.

This should make it clear on the Z and the RX-8... 8 of 9 2005 SCCA Solo2 National Championship B Stock trophys went to RX-8s.

It won't be B Stock with the 350Z and RX-8.

My gues is that the turbo Skystice will be put in A Stock, which is populated with the S2000, C4 Corvette, STi & Evo, Boxster, 993-vintage Porsche 911, NSX, etc. C4 Corvette seems to be the current car to have (if you can keep them from puking up their power steering pumps), but the S2000 (both versions) is still a contender. The boosted Skystice *should* be competitive there, since it offers the same power, more torque, and wider wheels in a package about the same weight and size as an S2000.

However, if the SCCA is feeling particularly miserly that day it could always end up in Super Stock, where it will become fodder for the three dominant SS cars right now: C5 Z06 (C6 Z06 not eligible for Stock class this season), 996-vintage Porsche GT3, & Lotus Elise.

RX-8 is currently the "car to have" in B Stock. The 350Z is capable of trophying at the National level (and indeed winning at the Tour/Pro level), but the leeming factor means that most of the top B Stock drivers are in RX-8s, so RX-8s keep winning.

The 350Z also has a couple of mechanical issues that hold it back from being a truly great autocross car: very limited front camber and minimal alignment adjustability from the factory means they are prone to understeer. Nissan ABS programming means brakes are prone to "ice mode" while autocrossing - hydraulic assist will feel like it disappears without warning, meaning brakes are hard to modulate well.
