I just got laid off today - There's gotta be a better way to make a living!
To put it frankly, the legal profession sucks.
I just finished a temporary job that is what legal types call a 'Document Review'. You sit at a computer screeen 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 days a week looking and documents and deciding legal issues. This one is especially bad because they had us crammed elbow to elbow in a room with our co-workers. They also had the manditory guy with no shirt on in the back of the room beating the drum to the rhythm of the keyboards. When you ask for 30 minutes for lunch they give you a dirty look. You are expected to not take a lunch break and eat your ramen at your desk. It's kind of like working in India, only the parking costs more.
These used to be low key affairs with just us paralegals and a few law clerks and guys fresh out of law school. They used to give us an actual hour for lunch. Now because of our wonderfully bad economy you have pissed off mid-career lawyers working with you while negotiating with the bill collectors on their cells. It's like working in a shark cage. And with so many of us unemployed they now know they can treat us like crap. There are no benefits. There is no job security. The pay is good, but considering the fact that I have a freaking Masters in Business, a Paralegal Certificate and a few computer certificates, it really isn't that good. Now I will be back on unemployment again until the next gig comes along.
I am seriously thinking of a career change. Possibly in the area of professional sheepherding or maybe working as an Arctic dogsled guide.
Are the car repo guys hiring?
