I just purchased new brakes and rotors for the M last month and was wondering what is the best method of keeping them from rusting ?
I now have new wheels and the rotors are starting to turn ugly rust brown. Other than painting
them what can be done without having to remove the wheels to clean (PITA) ????

Other than painting? I painted mine with caliper paint over a year ago. Still looks good.

Thats harsh - For a noob ! I tell you what- I'll find a way to keep them clean and I won't tell you.....

Noobs- Driving does not remove all the rust ! only where the pads hit DUH!

lol then deal with it, cosmetics are for chicks anyways LOL(im just screwing with you). little bit of oxidation in the center never hurt anybody.
When I changed my rotors a year or so ago I taped off the contact parts and sprayed the center hubs with hi temp paint. Better than it was but the rust is creeping back in slowly, and the outside rim with the cooling fins are still rusty, I didn't spray them because it looked like too much work.
If you live in a humid or rainy environment I dont think anything short of pulling the rotors, sanding and doing a good paintjob is going to cure the rust problem on the center hubs, then you'd always be fighting it anyway. Or you could buy carbon ceramic rotors, that would solve the problem.
He's not talking about the friction areas, he's talking about the rest of the rotor in the center that always rusts.Quote:

Or you can get 2 piece rotors with aluminum hats. But painiting them would be much cheaper.

They supposely have a non-corrosive coating.
Lot of negitives and positives the best one I saw was the use of high temp caliper paint. I would assume engine or header paint
would also serve well which is what i'll use. Black .
I don't mind you screwing with me just clean up when finished. LOL

I used Duplicolor caliper paint and brushed it on right over the rust over a year ago. Only prep was spraying rotor down with brake cleaner. They are still black as ever.
Yup, I use caliper paint on brake parts and it holds up pretty well. Black is nice, I don't have to continually touch it up like I did with red. An added benefit is that I don't like as much of a ricer, too! :D
Yeah black is in the works. I had to yank the new Godspeed radiator out of the car due to a small
leak in the upper right hand mounting bucket. Not a bad leak but just enough to show signs of
fluid after it was driven. No pressure loss or over heating. It more than likely was a porous weld.
I talked to the guy I got it from and He is going to give me a full refund. I am shipping it back
today. So while the cars down for a spell will give me time to detail the rotors and calipers.
