NB 2003 1.8 131K miles--Wanting to upgrade little things and thought of swapping in a wide-band O2 for the narrow-band at the MANIFOLD. Will this change register fine with the OBD-II (nothing else to do; plug-n-play) OR do I need to tell the ECU to read the new signal?

There's a few problems with what you're trying to do. My answers are based upon the assumption you're using a factory ECU since you say OBD 2.
The factory ECU is designed to run a narrow band. If it was programmed to run a wide band, it would have came with one.
Factory narrowbands are 4 wire. Most widebands are 5-6 wires.
How would you tell the ECU to read the signal? still assuming that you have an OEM ecu.
Why do you want a wide-band?
you have to swap in a innovate LC1 or the like that has a processor that will convert the signal, then tap that signal into the ECU. it WILL throw o2 heater circuit faults and most likely a primary O2 sensor fault as well, but should run normally. Myabe better depending on how the ecu reads the modified signal.
An o2 sensor in the manifold will also overheat.
brg, where are the sensors in a VW? the wb02 i have is a oem vw part IIRC. i thought it was in the manifold on those too.
In the manifold. That doesn't mean it won't overheat in your Miata. Don't think for a moment that VW is capable of doing much of anything successfully.Quote:
