I'm by no means an expert, but my guess would be a 95 Merlot Mica (Special/M Edition, I believe). Very, very pretty. I was going to look at one just before I bought my 2001, but the guy sold it before I got there.
I guess the real question is did it taste like root beer or merlot? You did taste it, didn't you? :D
I'm talking about the color you see on some of the older BMW Z3s it is a dark metallic brown. It's not the merlot cause there is one of those sitting next to it.

Honda sells the Element in a color called Rootbeer. You're sure it was a Miata, and not an Element?
