timing light

does anyone have a timing light i can borrow or come by and check my timing with?
im in mesquite for the week and i work in addison so somewhere around those areas would be great

Does your OBDII reader record the timing setting? If so, you don't need one. If it doesn't, you do. What year is your car?

You can set the timing with an OBDII scanner?? Link please.

You can't set timing with OBD2 scanner... It only shows what the ECU *THINKS* it is running at.

I have to check. Haven't hooked it up yet but I'm guessing so. If the ECU supports it this reader should read it. It's a '97.

Exactly. I was just hoping to use it as a readout while adjusting the timing. But you're making me think that method isn't very reliable...

It won't change with you manually adjusting it. It still thinks it is doing the same thing.

When you "adjust" the timing you are changing what the ecu sees as TDC of the motor. It is an unseen adjustment to the ECU.

I suppose I could still use it and simply advance timing until I get knocking. Does the ECU report knock count? Probably not the best idea though...

The knock you would be looking for is around peak torque with peak load... not something you do while setting the timing.

Thanks. Good info. Might just end up getting a timing light. But considering how infrequently I would use it, I'm considering other options.

But as long as the ECU kept a count I could keep an eye on it and gradually advance the timing.

A 97 does not have a knock sensor so the ECU has no way or reporting knock. Just buy a timing light as it is way cheaper than the damage knock can do to your engine.

I have some barely used Caterpillar spark plugs that should help your diesel run smoother.

Just go buy or borrow a timing light from an auto parts store.

I have one you can borrow. Come over to my house and borrow it at your leisure.

IIRC, Addison to Kyle is only about 4 hours each way.
