Default Minimum age for a rider?

What governs the minimum riders age, I was told Saturday it was 16, then I was reading the 2010 SCCA solo rule book tonight and came across this:

A passenger is allowed provided he/she: is no younger than twelve
    (12) years old; is in a vehicle which has passed tech inspection; is
    wearing a properly
fi tted seat belt and a properly fi tted helmet; he/
she (or parent/guardian, as appropriate) has completed and signed
the required participant waiver(s). In general, a passenger should be
either a student riding with an instructor or an instructor riding with
a student during an instructional run (as in a Solo drivers’ school).
However, it should also be noted that some Regions allow passengers
in order to acquaint newcomers with the sport. As long as the
passenger meets all of the above requirements, he/she would be
allowed at Regional events where a passenger is permitted. Passengers
are not allowed during competition runs in Divisional, National

    Tour, and National Solo events.

My soon to be 12 year old would be thrilled if this was true!!

Depends on the group and what their insurance rider allows.

I made the call last Saturday. It was based on several factors including the fact that we are not setup for it at NTAXS events. If all requirements listed above can be met this Sunday at the SCCA event, you are both welcome to ride.

The SCCA Kid carts program would be a cool way for your son to get some of his own seat time at his age.

Plus you would become the "Best Dad Evar"!

My daughter will Autocrossing shortly she gets her learners permit on Sept. 17th. But we plan to stick to NTAXS at first so she gets more runs and smaller crowds.

Please don't think I am questioning your call!!! I respect the descisions made by anyone running the events, I am trying to understand all the rules.

This car was bought as a dad and lad project, so my goal is to include him in as much of this as is allowed. I looked at carting, that does not fit the budget, Miata is much cheaper LOL!!

I hope you don't make the poor lad hang around in a hot parking lot all day waiting for dad to make his 4 runs.

No, we were on an observation/fact finding mission, we spent a couple of hours watching and looking at stuff. When he was a tot, I took him to Pennington to watch my friend Bob Woodruff run his car a couple of times. Plus he is used to getting put to work at events and such anyway. He is a great kid.

I see a pool in our future. I'll put $20 on the event #6 square.
