Macbooks are now $500? Even refurb they are $800. And they don't have Windows keys (which for people that use them with Windows is a big deal). Apple hardware is overpriced when comparing to cheap, disposable PC hardware.

But Apple's Snow Leopard is $29.99 at Best Buy for a single licensed copy.

    Sure beats Windows 7 prices.

The software you are planning to run on the computer. Does Windows 7 64 bit support that software?
Old versions of Office like '97 supposedly does not play well on 64 bit.

If you have any special manufacturing cad software or demos you might investigate what OS it will run on.
Printers are something to think about too. Old printers may not have a driver to work with a 64 bit OS.

Memory is your friend. The more the better.

You may also need to upgrade security software but you being a TCB I guess you are using the free ones.

I always go for cheap, I just bought my daughter a cheap Compaq (17"), Windows 7, 2 gb memory, 2.1 Ghz, 120 gb hard drive form Walmart. Basically, it's a nice little system for less than $400 (I think it was $318, display unit). The specs listed above is a nice "minimum" to shoot for. It's not a rocket fast machine but will do great for everyday use aside from heavy graphics.

I live on the south side of Ft Worth and stopped by this little shop near I-35W/I-20 a few weeks ago, the next time I personally need a laptop I'll get a used one from this guy. $500 bucks will go a long way. His used laptops are not junk and seem very reasonably priced.

    Get one of these:

I use it every day... I don't even bother with a separate keyboard any more.

I am typing this on a Toshiba Satellite L555D-s7005 that we found on sale for a hair over $500, and I have seen on sale for $499. 17" display, 320GB, 4gb expandable to 8gb, turion dual core, with numeric keypad. Downsides are only 2 usb ports, touchy realtek networking, and shows oil, dirt, and grease real easily. Comes with Windows7 Home Premium, I upgraded to Pro and have the WinXP VM, and have repartitioned to have a common DOS based partition and Linux partition running Slack 13.1. (Debian was a pain with getting the graphics to work, and for some reason Kubuntu didn't want to play nice with the home wireless.) It tightly fits in a bag I found at Walmart that has a swiss symbol on it.

More precise specs are likely easily found, and although the computer works for me, it may not work for you.

    Hope this helps.

    I bought the Toshiba.

I have a ten key pad like trickyrix has that I will give you, if you want it.

    Got this email today: http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail...E0A-_-Notebook

That Lenovo for $400 looks promising. I prefer Intel to AMD in my notebooks (mostly for heat and battery life). AMD in my desktops for sure though (bang for buck).

I got the same email and I'm a Lenovo fan. They would be my first choice if I was in the market.

well if you can swing the $$ to get the i3 vs. the dual core, not hyperthreading "T" series processors, I'd go that way.
