Don't confuse the lack of a proscribed punishment with a change in probable cause law. I'd expect to be pulled over for a chat and request for consent to search every 2 or 3 miles.
2011 Texas Legislature session accidentally removes penalty for not displaying license plates or registration stickers.

I didn't have time to wade through the attached bill to verify it, but looks like a legit article. Anyone want to test it out?![]()

It only goes to show when people can no longer discriminate on the grounds of race, religion, or sexual orientation, they can improvise and still find someone to hate. - Dave Moulton
If it's not required, how can it be used as probably cause?

Removing the penalty and removing the requirement are different. They can pull you over for a violation, even if they cannot actually punish you for that violation.

This article is wrong, they removed license plates from Section 502.473 and made it only about registration. 504.943 Is a new section that is 100% about license plates.
They just separated the 2 into different sections.
Did the penalty change?

I've owned one Miata or another for over 11 years and I've never run a front plate. Never got pulled over for it either.
Some wiseacre has decided that a minor omission in revised texas statutes means it's OK to run no plates since there's maybe possibly sorta no penalty. I say try it and find out. Just get video.

As a matter of fact, I drove a turbo'd Sunburst with a roll bar and nice suspension (that is to say, not slow) for years and never got a single ticket. Perhaps Karma is a real sweetheart and it depends on how you treat her.
j/k
FYI, I still get pulled over for putting the front plate on the driver's side of the car.

Only been pulled over for it once, on the DNT. got ticketed, but it was dismissed when I showed up at the JP's office with the plate on. They didn't look hard, or they would've noticed it was attached with tape on the back. :)
