I have the DDM and I love mine.
So the volume knob on the factory double din unit in my 96 crapped out like they are known to do and I want to replace it with a single din unit. I have read that not all installation kits work well for the NA's so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this. For now I would be fine with a pocket but the plan would be to add a row of gauges above the radio. Anyone already done this?
I did find this but I'm not forking over $80.

Outside of the DDM, most install kits are cheap plastic crap... and you still have to add a gauge panel if you want to run gauges in lieu of the factory pocket. I've got the DDM and it's a quality piece of work. If you're adding gauges, it's worth it IMO.

Well, if you want a generic POS install kit, just go to Best Buy or Fry's or any ol' stereo shop. They're all the same and they're all pretty crappy Chinese junk. For ~$20 (or whatever they cost now) you get what you pay for.

I replaced my OEM radio with one of these...works great, and I can put the old one back in if I ever want to.

Hey I'm going to thread jack on this on also! Anyone with the old Silver MSSS1 system setting on a shelf collecting dust?

How many gauges are you looking to put in?
I only need/want to move one from a vent to that area, so I'm planning on making my own version of: http://www.miatamania.com/Shop/ViewP...eIndexID=78104
Sam thanks for the TCB suggestion but I want a single din so I can add some gauges down the road.
Get off my lawn!
Right now I only have one gauge that I want to move so that just may work and one thing I did find out is that starting in 96 they changed the radio surround to be a true double din so some say it is possible to just reuse the factory brackets to mount the new stereo leaving a full size din opening.

With most DIN stereos you don't need a mounting kit at all -- the sleeve/chassis included with the HU will mount on the metal rails behind the plastic radio surround. This also enables the HU to sit flush with the surround, works great for me. I also folded/stapled some vinyl upholstery for a giant pocket to go under it, á lÃ* Mini. TCB FTW.
