Default HELP 5 speed is grinding

It first started on occasion but now it is consistent. When I up shift to 5 the gears grind. It only happens when I go up to 5 never down or to any other speed. I had the clutch and slave replaced last November and the gear and dif oils changed also at the time. I have about 33k miles on the new clutch and fluids since replacement. Could I just have low or thrashed oil and need to change it or is it more likely I am facing a tranny rebuild.

    Need a little more info....

What power level is your car at?
How many miles on your car/transmission?

Syncro is going. It will only get worst and will need to be changed.

I can only offer anecdotal advice, but my '02 started this at around 44k miles... I double clutched going in to 5th for 4-5k miles. One day, I realized that Amanda had taken the Miata for a spin and come back without commenting on the horrible noise going to 5th... Thy syncro has been fine ever since...

133500 miles. Never dyno'd but I am guessing HP @ around 175 from the mods listed in my sig.

I made 3 calls to Longview area transmission shops and heard what I feared and expected. The first place claimed the synchro would need to replaced but since they never go out they would have to pull the tranny, freight it to a "specialist" in Dallas and freight it back to Longview. Would not give me estimate until they pulled it and looked at it for $400. Second place was certain it was the Synchro and could handle the job but would be around $900. He suggested I pull a tranny from a wrecking yard and he would install it for $300. The third place, AAMCO told me the other guys were nuts and they could do it easily for $1400 and to be happy I don't have to have a new tranny installed for $3200.
Did somebody tatoo 'SUCKER' on my forhead while I was asleep? Wrecking yards in east Texas are just full of Miatas...NOT.

This is a good call, I got a 5spd from Gary for $350.00 and it worked well. I installed it myself. Way cheeper than opening up the tranny to try and fix it.

BTW avoid all shops that end in ...co!!!

I think 5th gear synco is bent. Usually happens when trying to find 3rd in a hurry and the transmission is moving under torque.

Wrecking yard in Fort Worth has a few for $375, All Import Auto Parts. I'll give Gary a call too. Heck, this will be the first time I actually replaced something that was broken on this car.
