Thread: Where to find an AC cord for a boom box?

Default Where to find an AC cord for a boom box?

Long story short, a friend of mine gave me a boom box for the garage, but it's missing the AC cord. It's not an AC/DC transformer type, so I can't get something generic from Radio Shack. Would a place like Tanner Electronics be a decent place to hunt for a cord?

BTW, it's a Magnavox AZ-8262. I found a cord online for $13 shipped, but they're not real clear on compatibility. I'll just run this thing on D batteries in the meantime.

If you know what adapter you need you can probably find it cheap here.

So you're finally going to have some music in the garage?

Yes... finally something besides the barbershop quartet that's taken up residence behind the parts washer.

Post a pic of boombox where you plug in the power cord. I may have what you need.

I would bet that Tanner's Electronics has one. That was a very common style back in the 70's and 80's on tape recorders and stereos.

Ok, here comes the dumbest question in the world...here goes... Did you look in the storage compartment? Some old boom-boxes had a place you could stow the cord when not in use.

Seriously, try the thrift stores. Goodwilll has all kinds of older electronics. I bet you could find one there for less than $10. Of course, then you'd have two boom-boxes.

Yep, I looked in the storage compartment - no dice. My buddy brought it over with a random power cord that doesn't quite fit. We went through his cord boxes and couldn't come up with one that fit right. Beggars can't be choosers, and the thing works fine on batteries. I do like it because it's got a CD player and a digital radio tuner - not that fiddly analog knob BS.

I'll try Tanner's this weekend and maybe take a swim through a thrift store. There's a Salvation Army up on North Garland Ave that I've been meaning to browse through... don't laugh, they're very TCB-friendly!

Gary, did you come up with anything?

any chance of popping the case open and sacrificing an old extension cord to hard wire a pig tail on it?

sorry for the delay, I will look tonight. As suggested above, soldering an old lamp cord on those two prongs would work.

I hate to throw away cords, cables and power supplies. My stash has come in handy many times. My IT dept. at work was throwing away a lot of cables and I scored some 50' RGB and RCA cables. There were also a couple of Monster mini jack to RCA cables that you can use to connect an iPod or MP3 player to your home stereo.

I'm a pack rat too... the other day I dug a clock radio out of storage box and put it into service. I've probably had the thing 20 years, and I hadn't seen it in at least 10. Still works like a champ, and it's got fancy fake wood trim!
