Default First major news story that you remember

At the risk of sounding like Black Roadster, what was the first major news story that you remember?

I think mine was the Iranian hostage crisis.

I kinda remember the 1980 election, but I definitely remember Reagan getting shot.

I was in Mrs. Leahy's senior English class at 12:30 pm on November 22, 1963. One of the guys in the class had a dream the night before, so he brought a radio to class. As soon as the news hit the radio, he took the earphone out of the radio so we all could hear.

If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

I can't remember what was first, but either television coverage of the Vietnam war, or the footage of the moonbuggy from Apollo 15th.

Watergate hearings...what I remember is all the TV channels were showing boring (for a kid) hearings all day instead of the regular schedule.

Oh man! I remember that vividly... that was back in the day when they'd roll TVs into the class and let us all watch space shuttle launches. They went ahead and sent us home for the day after that one...

This one. I was in kindergarden and the announcement came over the speaker in the room. I remember all the adults (including my parents who came and picked us kids up) crying. I did not know what a President was, but I learned it that day.

Heard the news flash on the radio as we came back from lunch - 10th grade - went back to English class and told the teacher. She didn't believe us until the PA announcement by the principal.

Wow, lotsa old farts on here.

I remember the news coverage of the Vietnam cease fire, because my uncle was serving there in the Army and my mother cried about it. I thought she was sad, till she explained about tears of joy.

I also vividly remember the launch of Skylab; I was convinced that I could go there and wave to my baby brother. I even snuck out into the backyard after bedtime in the El Centro, CA desert to try to see it.
