With three of your options being more power, I'd lean toward one of those options. Not an answer per se, but an observation.

UM little to no point putting FI on a 1.6

Unless the 1.6 motor is bad, there is no good reason to invest in a swap. I'd pull the head and have it tweaked/rebuilt, shaved and maybe port/polished (or better yet, find one that's already souped up), then get a Megasquirt Tune and enjoy the car.

An inexpensive turbo would be a nice option too.

How's the current motor? Burning oil? How many miles? How's he paint? Mechanical reliability should be #1 priority on a daily driver.

No such thing when it comes to reliable powerful FI.

It's a dfwmiata.com tradition. We like cheese. You'd think we were from Wisconsin. Hell. I'm lactose intolerant, and I still like cheese. Plus, we refuse to take polls seriously.

I vote a 1.8 swap... engine, rear subframe, and diff/axles.

you say you want performance and driveability... simply upgrade to "stock" parts... proven on the road and track!

The VVT cars 2001+ prefer premium fuel that is my one gripe on our 2002.

Other than a few random sensor, a coil failure, & OEM clutch shudder it has been a tank for the last eleven years that we have had it.

What POS said... Only clutch shudder on mine, though.
