    Default External hard drive enclosure.

Are they all pretty much created equal? Compusa has one, and it is on sale a little since they are closing. I just want one for back ups. I have a spare 350gb drive right now.

I like the Adaptec enclosures better than most of the standalones. In general they all suck balls, so as long as it's less than $20, you should be ok.
Maybe 4 wheels aren't so bad after all... wickett.org

Are you gonna run it 24/7? An hour a week? Portable?

An hour a week for back up. That is probably it since I have a ton of space on my main HD.

Or you could build a cheap PC and use it as a server.

I don't know what I'd do without mine. It works as a backup, media, software, and print server. I use it to play music all the time. Nice part is that it has a RAID 5 array. 3x120 GB drives to provide some redundancy and fault tolerance. 240 GB usable space. My other PC's automajically backup twice a week; one full and one incremental with overwriting of the old one to save space. The server maintains itself with weekly updates, defrags, and AV scans.

Well since I am in an apartment with a desk that is tight on space as well, this might be overkill. Also since this and my girlfriends laptop are our only computers and I cant even get them to talk, adding one more is probably a bad idea. I think that a simple HD to backup pictures and other basics is plenty. Thanks though.
