They're not computer savvy, so would Vista on their new laptop be a good mix? Main uses would be email, some photo disc-making, and the intar-web.

They're in Florida... I don't want to have jump on a plane, get the pc, return, and then have to go to your house late at night just so that I can get Ubuntu fixed, and then ship it back.
my grandfather got vista about a month ago for his old sony desktop. he likes it and has it for the same uses but also was able to get it to hook up to the 56" HD and play movies from the pc. 65 and not savvy so i would say it should work if that's what they want. dell offers xp on there lappys still and you can even get Ubuntu preinstalled. not a dell fan but it works for some people.They're not computer savvy, so would Vista on their new laptop be a good mix? I think for now Windows XP would be best. As has been pointed out Dell still offers laptops in Windows XP. The reason I recommend WinXP is that everything currently works on WinXP and Vista has some compatibility issues.
Ubuntu is a good candidate for an easy-to-use Linux, but I am not sure that Linux is 100% reader for the average non-computer-savvy user.
Edit: Oh yeah, and basic software should still be written that works for XP for quite a long time.
As for remote tech help, I've been using Timbuktu for years with my Mom's laptop 1800 miles away. It works well but I'm curious about the built-in support in XP.
