Anyone a good computer tech?

My T40 Thinkpad recently developed a problem where the screen goes black, gets jumbled or freezes up when you moved it. It then got worse to where it would do that if you bumped the laptop much. I took it apart to make sure all the connectors/cables were tight and they were. It worked better for a while then the last time when I took it apart I disconnected the keyboard which has the power button connected to it.

After putting the connector back on the thing won't turn on now. Can anyone around here diagnose/fix such a problem?

Assuming you actually hooked everything back up correctly and didn't short it out with static, or damage it, The problem sounds like a circut on a board that needs to be re-soldered. You can probably get it fixed if you are willing to throw enough money at it, but It's probably cheeper to get a new one. Now a techie may be willing to move all your data to your new Laptop, for the low-low price of getting to keep your old laptop. A techie can probably fix it with enough time, albiet it may be a lot of time.

Question, did this problem happen, even if you had the laptop plugged into a working monitor?

You must've forgotten that I'm more asian than you (aka cheap) only to be rivaled by Apex2Apex who re-used a lunch box that was trapped in his trunk for 2 weeks WITH FOOD ROTTING IN IT.

And actually I checked and it's a T42 not a T40.

I didn't try plugging it into a monitor but I think that the whole computer froze, not just the screen. I will probably just get a new motherboard and slap it in.

I had a similar problem with my dell laptop. Turned out that there was a short on the mother board - ended up "frying" it. You could see the burn marks. It worked for a while, but if you bumped it or moved it the screen would blank out. Then if finally quit working altogether and that's when I discovered the short and that it burnt up. My new laptop had a similar problem, so I hooked it up to a monitor and it worked fine, so in that case I just had to replace the screen which was covered under warranty.

Sounds like you are comfortable opening your machine up, so do it and check for burn spots and check all the connections while you're at it.

If you want a contact for a good PC guy, let me know. I have a friend in Richardson who works on computers and at an affordable price. I've known him for 15+ years and have always gone to him for help/advice.

I checked the mobo and didn't see any burn marks etc. I'll probably send it to an account of mine that works on and recycles IBM thinkpad parts. In the meantime I'm waiting for the 9" Asus E PC to come out for a replacement.
