Thread: Rattle can nosejob

    Default Rattle can nosejob

My dad helped me paint the front nose on the Miata yesterday. The paint had peeled off about 90% of the front nose and it looked absolutely terrible. I eventually want to get the car out to Rogue for a proper paint job, but I'll have to save up for that. I figure what's about $15 and a day to at at least have an entire black car again and not have to shrink in the seat to avoid being seen pulling into the school parkinglot... Actually, overall I am impressed with how it came out.

We spent most of the day on prepwork, sanding and all that. We used this Krylon Fusion, plastic outdoor paint...only reason we got this is because of the flex agent in the paint. Figured it would be more durable as well being outdoor paint. We did about 4 coats, sanding inbetween to get rid of the orangepeel and overspray caused by wind.

After the first two coats a bird freaking crapped on the pretty fresh paint while it was drying, right in the middle. What are the odds...I don't even have any trees in front of my house...

Turned out pretty good. Im dissappointed with the gloss of this paint, although it went on suprisingly even for a rattle can. In a few weeks im going to see if I can buff it out a little and wax it. If that fails i'll put a coat of high gloss on it, or expierement with a clearcoat...I dont know, we'll see how it goes. Any advise for getting a shine out of rattle can outdoor paint??

Actually, if I could paint the whole car with this type of semi gloss it would be awesome! Something I might consider later.

Again, I know it probably wont hold up too long, this is only temporary untill I can afford a proper paint job, it's better than a cow spotted white/black bumper. The car looked so bad I was embarrassed to be seen driving the damn thing.

**Edit: those spots here and there are water drops from the dew. I took the pics early this morning after I pulled the masking bags out of the turn signals and got water drops here and there.

I like that satin finish. There was an LP550 out at the car show yesterday like that. Very stealthy.

I guess I'm going to have to do something with my paint pretty soon too. It's looking pretty pathetic but I'm trying to embrace it's ghettisamo.

I've been researching doing a home paint job with a spray rig but I'm not certain I'm up for that level of commitment right now. It seems like the roll on rustoleum is all the rage for home auto painting on you tube but that seems like even more work than spraying it since you have a sand the piss out of it to get any kind of shine on it and the coats take so long to dry before you can touch them at all.

Try photobucket for uploading photos, or I think paying members can upload directly. Im not sure if that site allows direct linking since it's all the photos are displayed in flash.

Yea I saw your pics, man yea, you might get that rust in check pretty quick, at least get a coat of primer or something.

I thought about the rustoleum thing, but man seems like tons of time, work, and expiermentation to get it to work right. This stuff we used only took 15 minutes to dry before sanding and applying the next coat.

I saw a flat silver paint job on one of the car shows. Looked wicked. I want to paint something flat silver now.
