Hey all, I'm looking at getting a miata. Love how they drive. Trying to trade a 1992 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 for one or sell it to buy one.
A lil about myself, been in the car seen for about 5 years, currently 21. I own a 1971 olds 442 me and my father restored together as a father son project, use to have a 1990 Nissan 300zx and liked it alot, then traded for this vr4. I've done drag racing, watched drift events and such. Now I'm looking into getting into auto-x and autocross and need a dd and what does those better than a miata right?
Only problem is I'm 6'2, anyway to lower the seat any?

Have you tried a Miata on for size? There may not be a problem with the fit. As sammm said, there is a 'foamectomy' and there are aftermarket seats.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

Yea I test drove a 1991, thing was a pile. Guy is asking 2,400 and its worth about 1k at most. Rattled really bad and I never took it over 35mph. Also what kind of oil pressure do these things sit at? Does the speedometer kinda jump or is it smooth? His speedo was really shakey.
But my eye's are almost level with the top of the windshield and the top was down so I don't know how much room I'd have with the top up.

I am 6'1 and no issues nor a foamectomy.
I also have been driving roadsters for about 25 years, so I learned how to fit.
You learn ingress/egress procedures.
Yes, There were a couple of Miata's at Propwash, you could have tried on for size. :p
I'm 6' or about 6'1" if I can ever get my back to cooperate (beat it up pretty good over the years). I fit without seat foam removal, until I put a helmet on. Street lights were a bitch too if I was the first in line with the top up. Did the foam removal, and I fit much better, even with helmet. Street lights are still iffy at best with the top up. I still would like to get racing buckets, but that money is "better" spent elsewhere right now :/

If you remove just the bottom section (which is the usual "foamectomy"), you won't even notice a difference in feel. Actually, you will - I think the seat feels BETTER with the bottom section trimmed. I removed the back section as well, and I do NOT recommend that for anything but a track day or auto-x. It slips in and out in a matter of seconds though, so that's not out of the question.
FWIW, I drove straight from Syracuse, NY to Apopka (Orlando), FL with just the bottom part of the seat foam removed. I was a happy camper.
I drove straight from Orlando, FL to Euless, TX with the bottom section de-foamed as well as the back section. My ass was happy. My back hurt almost as much as when I compressed a vertebrate years ago. Even with a towel stuffed back there for some lumbar support, driving over 2 hours with the seat back foam removed makes my back go numb.

Removing the section of foam in the bottom of the seat is what people mean when they refer to a "foamectomy." I highly recommend that, as I think it feels BETTER than the stock seat. You have to cut the foam, so it's not easily reversible (read: most likely will need to buy a new seat bottom).
DO NOT remove the pad that slips into the seat back. It will sink you further in to the seat, which will hold you in better, but it is so incredibly uncomfortable on longer trips. The pad slips in and out rather easily once you remove it the first time, so it is very easy to reverse.

I'm not working with much "girth" right now :) If I shaved the bolsters, I would be sliding around like I did with the back pad in there.
Nice I may have to look into that. Thanks for the info! Yea I saw the video of the guy taking the back part out and that just looked dumb and uncomfortable, then he said you could use a towel for more cushion and I lol'd.
I don't need much girth lol, I'm 6'2 175-180 depending on the day so I'm not too big. Just have long legs.

On short drives, it's really not that bad at all. At least I don't think so. But like I said, once I start pushing 2 hours in the car, my back waves a little white flag. The towel thing is more for lumbar support (you roll it up and place behind your lower back) than it is for more "cushion."
If my car ever moves again, and we happen to be at the same place at the same time, you're more than welcome to sit in my seat for a bit to feel it out.
Thanks man, yea I plan in being in this car alot, plus with my back having been messed up from a bad accident when I got hit by a drunk running a redliht and he totalled my truck, I had to go through 2+months of adjustments at the chiropractor so I plan on keeping the back in for support.![]()
Welcome. I was 6' 2" when I bought my car in 89. Never been a problem.
