School should not start in mid August.

In Texas, no public school can start prior to the 4th Monday of August. That's a private school he's referring to. The waiver system that used to allow districts like Plano to keep opening earlier was eliminated a couple years ago.

Still, it's either start in August or finish in late-June. You've got to have 182 school days by law, so do the math.

You only work 182 days a year!
    M3 is always the answer.

Our district did something strange last year that seemed to get around that rule... Students with high grades and high attendance (which included more than half of the 3-5 school) only went to school 170 days while the rest went 180 days. Jamie's last day of school was 5/24 because of this and she doesn't go back until 8/27. It looks like they are not doing that this year, but still the district calender shows 177 student days.

Public school start date is dependent upon the Labor Day holiday. It was early last year and late this year.

Incorrect. Earliest allowable start is the 4th Monday of August, period.

@ Ken O - yep, 182 working days, students are actually 178, I recall now. You know this, teacher's husband. Part of the reason we don't get much leverage when they consider pay raises.

Of course, when you subtract the 104 weekend days and the dozen or so official holidays, that leaves 67 days of vacation. Most professionals get 3-4 weeks/year, so 15-20 workdays, but they do get to choose when they take them. We get about 40 more days off a year than the average year-round professional. Nothing to sneeze at by any means, but not the 3 months+ everyone thinks it is.

The thing I didn't think about until my kid was in school... all the teachers get f'ed (and families with school aged kids) because vacation costs can quite literally double... no more first week of december cruises. Now if I want to go, my cost/person for a week cruise went from $500/pp + $400 in airfare to $900 + 900 in airfare. Of course, I can pull my kid out of school, but then you get into the whole truancy bs that has sprung up to make sure that the schools get their money...

I started back today for orientation and have a teacher work day tomorrow. I just finished summer school 2 weeks ago.

You are correct. My wife thought it was Labor Day dependent.

It used to be. This is only the 2nd year under the new rule, so we are both right, sorta.

Somehow the term happy ending and the dancing banana had my mind going in a different direction.
