Before I broke the stock radio and pulled it out, I had it sitting under my aftermarket as a dummy...or to cover the hole. They both filled the radio cavity perfectly. I broke it and pulled it out so now I have the big hole under my aftermarket.

Im pretty sure the stock radio/tape player was a 1.5 din and the OEM CD player that accompanied it was 1 din. Dont quote me on that though, I yanked it out awhile ago.

While we're on the subject, anyone know where to buy a cheap plastic pocket (for CDs and such) to put in the hole?

The NA radio is a din and a half, but for $20 you can get a factory pocket from a 2001 Mazda. The only issue may be the method of mounting. The NA was screwed in to a bracket and the NB was clipped in place.

When I installed the after-market radio in my '92, I bought a mounting kit for the car (at Best Buy I think). It came with the 'cubby' to fill the hole.

I also am replacing my OEM FM/CD/Tape (1.5 Din??) with another used OEM FM/Tape (1.0 Din??) and will need to fill the hole. I'll check w/ Best Buy. Another concern is that the replacement is marked "ANTI-THEFT". Do I really need to do anything to overcome this....to make it play?

It depends in part on the year of the car... I can tell you that I recently pulled the more-or-less double-DIN Mazda Premium sound system out of my '96 and replaced it with an aftermarket 1-DIN Sony and the 1-DIN dash pocket from an NB, plus a little piece of trim to cover a small ~1/8 inch gap. I used the factory radio bracket to mount the Sony.

A buddy with a '91 recently installed the same headunit using the POS Metra kit, and just used the supplied blanking plate below the radio. The pocket that comes in the kit is very small and would not work once we got the kit to fit in the dash. The kit did not work exactly according to the instructions, but with a little creativity we got it to work. I think with even more creativity and a Dremel tool, we could get the NB pocket to work also - though not a cleanly as it works in my car. The '94 - '96 center dash piece is different from the 1.6 cars'. The cassette deck we removed from the '91 is bigger than 1-DIN, though I'm not sure it's a full 1.5 DIN, either.

Finally, apparently the 96.5 and 97 cars had a true DIN cassette deck - and the dash opening is again slightly different. Reportedly an actual 2-DIN, though I haven't measured one.

Finding a pocket is not the easiest thing, either. NA pockets are no longer available. The NB pocket can be had from Town North for ~$12, but you have to be creative in mounting it. If you already have a <1-DIN pocket below the early factory cassette - I'd be inclined to keep it and make a spacer to fill the gap. If you have a 1.8 car, I can share more details & photos of my install with you.

So, Go over to Nissan and get a 1999 Nissan Frontier Pocket. It screws onto the factory bracket the same as the bracket that the mazda Miata uses.

By the way, I hate the Metra and Scosche kits and try to avoid them at all costs. Also Alpine makes a 1 din Speaker that will fit in the other slot. Moss sells a three gauge set that fits under the radio. Some of the aftermarket manufacturers have 1 din equalizers and 6-disk changers.
