Miata Focus Day Update - Part 2

OK boys and girls we hope you have your car ready for some track time. We will have two groups A and B. Group A are those who have little to none open road track experience. Group B is the rest of you. Below is the list of participants.

You need to be out there around 12:00. When you get there you will see other Miatas and park pretty much anywhere you want. Come find us, we will have a Track Dog Racing banner. You will also need to sign a waiver at the main desk.

Afterwards, start removing all loose items, such as in your glove box and console, spare tire and trunk accessories. Let someone know from our Track Dog group that you need to be tech'd when you are ready. See us at the track for a number if you have not already been assigned one.

There is a dress code for this event isn't there, if I recall correctly long pants & a long sleeved shirt.

I believe those have to be closed-toe "shows" as well, don't they?

That is correct, closed toe shoes such as tennis shoes. As for the helmet, it is suppose to be only the latest automotive helmet, but Jack will let the motorcycle and older helmets pass. Remember, this is an introductory class to open road racing, not a race school.

Well, again this is rated an introductory class so you don't have to wear a full race suit and that is the rule. Now shut up and start thinking about apexes and braking points and quit worring about the shirt! I would suggest a long sleeve cotton t-shirt. See you later tonight.

Thought I would bring up the subject on tire pressure. For this event, it depends on the tires you are using. You should chaeck your air before you leave the house that morning while the tires are cold for your base number. Now I am not an auto crosser so I can not speak for that style of driving, but I can for open track.

If you have track worthy street tires that have stiff side walls such as Kuhmo MX or Falken Azennas to name a few I would recommend 32 PSI in the front and 30PSI in the rear. Ideally, you could drop the left rear 1 PSI lower if you like as this tires sees the least amount of heat build up on this track. Running a little lower air pressure will help the tire to generate heat sooner. Driving hard will bring the air pressure up to around 37-38 PSI.

If you are running more of a performance street tire they will have softer side walls. Because of the softer side walls you want to run with higher air pressure than listed above. This is to prevent less tire distortion which makes the tire roll on the outer edges, causing more wear and slower turn in. Some of the tire brands are the Toyo T1S in the 195 size (I believe the 205 size has reinforced side walls) and Yokohama ES-100 that come to mind. I would recommend 34 PSI in the front and 32PSI in the rear.

Again, I can not speak for auto crossing, but those of you with more experience and have adjustable sway bars, I would suggest full stiff on the front and full soft on the rear.

This would be cold air pressure say before you leave the house. After your car sits up for about an hour at the track they will be pretty close to that as well. Just easier to take care of it now than at the track as you will have to beg for air out there as there is not a common air hose laying around.
