That brings back memories. I think that area used to be called Mosier Valley and it was mostly share croppers that lived down there. IIRC the story was 2 couples from L.D.Bell went down that road in the river bottoms on prom night to buy alcohol. The sign warning that the bridge had been washed out had been removed as a prank. The car went into the creek killing both girls. Their dates left the scene and did not tell anyone. On the night of the prom you can go down there and listen to the girls scream for their dates.

Really? That's not how I heard it.

Some high school boys set the bridge on fire a week before the exit. They did this because at the time Mosier Valley was predominately a black neighborhood (I also heard that it was done as a prank, so I don't know which is true), and the bridge linked MV to Arlington. Well the bridge didn't burn down completely, but it was damaged. Anyways, 6 girls from Arlington were in the area, and were being harassed by a bunch of bikers. They sped off down the road, not realizing that the bridge wasn't going to support their car. When they drove over it, it collapsed and I think 3 of them died on the scene, and another died at the hospital.

Back in 2007 I had come across some forum posts from people who went to high school with the girls. That's the story that I read on the forum, and that's how I found out the real location (one of them posted it).

Some searching revealed that the original bridge was torn down in the early 90's and the legend moved to the bridge pictured above. Also found this that apears to be from a kook that did a bunch of fact checking:

He had slowed down due to a train that ran just across the other side of the bridge. He got out of his car and noticed that the bridge was burned out with his tires at the edge of the creek. As the girls passed he stated that he honked his horn and flashed his lights to warn them that the bridge was out. The six girls Mary Lou Goldner, Kathy Fleming, Claudia Jean Reeves, Donna Post, Jo Ann Anderson, and Dorothy Ibsen out of fear only proceeded to drive faster until they flew over the creek crashing into the embankment. Bill Young the driver of the other car said that they were going about 45 miles per hour. Two of the girls were killed instantly the third was dead upon arrival at Baylor hospital. The other three girls were injured but know had to live with the tragedy for the rest of there lives. They later found out that the bridge had been burned buy four boys Clinton Veres, Tracey Stanley, Ronald Max Moore, and Richard Truett Rivers on the night of Jan.27 1961. It had been stated that they found some straw and lighted a match, stuck it to the bridge and drove away. The jury decided to give the boys leniency and stated to give the boys one more chance in life because it was only a prank. To my knowledge they never found out who had removed the barricades that would have warned the teenage girls of the fate they were fixing to meet. After the grieving was over the stories began that you could still hear the screams of the girls at midnight which the accident occurred at around 9:30 pm. The bridge was then bulldozed down and big drainage tunnels and mounds of dirt were brought in to replace the bridge. Then they had built another bridge further up the road so the legend went on at the wrong location. Then years later on March 10 1994 another accident happened at the same place where the bridge once stood. Rayelynn Jonston, and Tammy Lynn Dodson apparently tried to race an oncoming train and it smashed into the passenger side of the truck. One of the girls was knocked out of the vehicle while the other remained trapped while it burst into flames. Both ladies died at the scene of the accident. Which turned the name of the place from the screaming bridge to death crossing. We have and will be conducting investigations of the area for paranormal activity.

It was always somebodies job to get back in the brush when the legend stories would start and wait for the cue to come running out screamming with a waterballoon. Some times the story would include testimony of having witnessed devil worship and goat killing there at night and somebody would get slapped with some raw meat at just the right moment. Another variation was that the girls had been trapped in the burning car and drowned and would ride home with people in the back seat. You make the freshmen ride out in the backseat since they didn't have drivers license yet and during the drinking and story telling around the fire somebody would wet down the back seat before taking the freshman back out on beer run.

When did you graduate L.D.Bell? I graduated in 1986 and the bottoms were my favorite stomping grounds along with late night drag racing on Trinity behind Bell helicopter.*

Back in '84 I was running around in big American Iron a '77 Olds 442 with a 403 V8 (with working a/c) I don't recall any MG's.

I did have a TR6 but I don't think it was running in '84 think I got it back on the streets around '85.

Found a picture of the 442 I'm pretty sure this was taken in the Bottoms.

Is the Grey Ghosts' biker club house still down there? That always gave me the creeps when I passed by in the back seat of my parents car. Grey cinderblock building with a ghost painted on the wall. It always looked like a murder had just happened back in there. I was 5, ok.
