Default --- If you are 40, or older, you might find this amusing!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways. yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of forty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

    1) I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

    2) There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

    3) Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

    4) There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

    5) Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?

    6) We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

    7) There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOSH !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

8 ) And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

    9) We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen...Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

    10) You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!

    11) There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to waitALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats!

    12) And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

    13) And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores! And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place! See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1970 or any time before!

    Regards,

I'm just shy of 30, and all that applies except the microwave. We had the internet "early" for my father's work, and I was nearly at some states' driving age by that time.

Oh, we had the original Nintendo by the time I was walking, but we had an Atari system for a few years yet.

You forgot the part in number 5 where during the song as it builds and builds, builds up to a certain point then, ka-chink...it skips to the next track to finish the song.

You worked and saved for it and then it sat in the yard until you saved up enough to pay for insurance.

Awesome... being 41 here I can relate to all above. I love the CPS part! Yes, there were no safe houses when I was kid. You 'effed up and somebody was there to put you in your place, as it should be!
I use to worry about money; but then realized I don't HAVE anything to worry about.

I would add that the lucky had "cable tv" which meant you got 12 channels rather then 3 or 4 with an antenna.

Atari was out when I was young, and many friends had it. Mom bought a Pong console from a garage sale and told me to consider myself lucky. Mom drove a 450 SLC, dad drove an XJ12, and I got a garage sale Pong... I wasn't feeling too lucky. Mom called it tough love.

I beg to differer. There were remote contols for TVs back then. I was one of them. :)

But Yes I agree with everything.
We called all the ladies in the neighborhood mom and they all had permission to tan our hides good if we deserved it.
We Played tackle football on a crumbling asphault street. If we hurt ourselves the first question was "Now what did you learn?".
I Didn't have everything I wanted but always had everything I needed.
We would spend all day outdoors and complain when we had to come in for dinner.
My rich relatives had a pong machine. It was awsome.

I remember the first video game I ever saw. It was a Pong console in the lobby of a movie house. I was probably 25 or 26. We had cable at home when I was a kid. It was real CATV so we could get 5 or 6 channels including the local station.

Before cable, the thing to have was an 'electric' antenna up on a tall mast. There was a big box with a dial that sat on the TV that controlled the rotation. That would get us an extra 4-5 channels back in the day.

Thanks onething I was starting to feel old!
POS, You nailed it, but wait until your 51: you had an Atari in your house? I remember when the first Pong was was put in a grocery store and that was a big deal. It was next to the tube tester (never mind kids).
I’m assuming the “Tape” you’re referring to had 8 tracks (possibly 4) and not of those fancy cassette things you kids grew up with.
I would show this thread to my mother but she would remind me I had it made because she grew up with bomb shelters that she would run to when the sirens went off (True story).

Hot Wheels toy cars came out in 1968. I believe I received a Hot Wheels race track for Christmas in 1969. I remember buying the cars for $1.00 which is the current price at Big Lots now.

    Default 60 in a fortnight

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We take responsibility for all we've done and don't blame others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection we would like to point out that it was NOTthe senior citizens who took:

    The melody out of music
    The pride out of appearance
    The courtesy out of driving
    The romance out of love
    The commitment out of marriage
    The responsibility out of parenthood
    Thetogetherness out of the family
    The learning out of education
    The service out of patriotism
    The Golden Rule from rulers
The nativity scene out of cities
    The civility out of behaviour
    The refinement out of language
    The dedication out of employment
    The prudence out of spending
The ambition out of achievement or
God out of government and school.

    I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I'm very good at opening childproof caps - with a hammer.

I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.

I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just one leg.

I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.

I'm a walking storeroom of facts - I've just lost the key to the storeroom door.

Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!

But I used large type so I could read it.
