Check your gas cap. The seal can wear out.
Does it 'hiss' when you open it, like it's relieving pressure?
Recently my car has been smelling like gas when it is running. It seems to be running fine but it smells like a go kart or your dad's old lawnmower. I'm concerned because when this happened in my neon, it turned out to be a fuel line leaking onto my engine. I haven't seen anything leaking from the hoses but i'm really not sure what to check.
Any suggestions?
thanks,
pogo

I have this same exact problem, it comes on STRONG sometimes, but only when it's really hot outside and im stuck in traffic. I sniff all over the car and cannot identify where it is coming from. Not the gas cap from what I can tell.
Read this thread on Miata.net. http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread...mell+fuel+pump
This guy had the same problem and found that a pressure relive valve on the fuel pump right behind the drivers seat was plugged and venting gas fumes into the rear deck carpet. that can't be healthy... I plan to clean that valve out, but haven't gotten around to it...mainly because everythign's rusted back there and I can't get the bolts lose without an extractor kit.
Try this and report back here, im going to do it myself next time I get another free weekend.
